Identity Theft

Over the next few days we will be discussing Identity Theft here on the blog. We’ll talk about how you can protect yourself by minimizing risk, and how to recover from an unfortunate loss due to fraud.

Did you know that there are many factors that may put you at risk for identity theft? Here are just a few:

  • Receiving frequent offers of pre-approved credit
  • Not shredding pre-approved credit offers, banking and credit info before putting it into the trash
  • Carrying your Social Security card, Medicare card or military ID in your wallet
  • Using a computer without up-to-date anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall protection
  • Not reviewing your recent credit reports
  • Using an unlocked, open mailbox
  • Throwing away old credit and debit cards without shredding or cutting up first
  • Using an ATM machine without examining for sign of tampering beforehand
  • Providing your Social Security number whenever asked, without asking why it is needed or how it will be used/safeguarded
  • Providing your SSN orally (over the phone or in person) when others could be listening
  • Responding to unsolicited email messages that appear to be from your bank, credit card company or stores you may frequent
  • Leaving your purse, wallet or other personal information in your vehicle
  • Neglecting to verify that all financial statements are accurate each month
  • Using your SSN on your driver’s license and/or personal checks

Check back later to find out how to keep yourself protected.

Preventing Mosquito Bites This Summer

In Alaska, we often joke that the mosquito is our state bird, but mosquito bites are no laughing matter. Remember to take precautions this summer to prevent mosquito bites and the potential spread of disease that they may carry. To reduce your risk, avoid bites and illness and remove mosquitoes from areas where you work and play.

Here are a few tips to help prevent mosquito bites this summer:

  • Use insect repellent on exposed skin while outdoors. Use an EPA-registered repellent containing picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or DEET. Carefully follow instructions to make sure you are applying the repellent correctly.
  • Wear long-sleeves, long pants and socks while outdoors whenever possible.
  • Avoid being outdoors during peak mosquito hours (typically evening and early morning), or take extra precaution with repellent and protective clothing.
  • Install or repair window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
  • Drain standing water to prevent mosquito breeding near your home.

Flu Prevention

According to the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, the confirmed number of flu cases in Alaska has more than doubled since last week. Please take precautions to avoid catching and spreading the flu virus.

Here are some tips to keep you healthy and flu-free:

  1. Cover your mouth and nose while sneezing to prevent the spread of flu germs. Sneeze into a tissue or paper towel, or the crook of your arm.
  2. Frequently wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
  3. Keep your hands away from your face. Avoid rubbing your eyes, nose and mouth.
  4. Practice healthy habits to strengthen your immune system: eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, reduce stress and get plenty of rest.
  5. Stay home from school or work if you are contagious to prevent spreading the flu, and avoid close contact with others who are sick.

Life Insurance: Key to protecting your loved ones

Did anyone catch the Today Show this morning? They just ran a segment on the importance of life insurance and how so many people don’t have life insurance. According to an article on PRNewswire on January 24, 2011, “A recent survey from the non-profit LIFE Foundation reports that 56 percent of Americans claim the economic downturn makes it more important to have a life insurance policy, compared to only 9 percent who feel the need has decreased.” In tough economic times though, many people are choosing instead to use the money they could have spent on life insurance to pay off debts, pad their savings accounts or simply buy groceries.

It is a mistake though, to think that you should put off buying life insurance until your golden years. Please make life insurance a priority to ensure that your loved ones are taken care of in the unfortunate event of you suffering a serious injury, illness or even death. In many instances, it is VERY affordable to purchase adequate life insurance. If you are young and in good health, you may be able to purchase life insurance for about the same cost as going to the movie theater once a month.

The article mentioned above provided by LifeInsuranceAgency.com offers some very helpful tips for purchasing life insurance for the best possible price.

“In the event you are having money issues but need or have an interest in life insurance, there are some things to do about it in tough economic times:

  1. Shop around and get multiple FREE Life Insurance Quotes. Don’t settle on just one insurer and take the first quote you receive. Just like buying a car or other big-ticket item, shop around for the best and most affordable policy.
  2. Discuss the matter with an independent insurance agent in your region. An agent can review your financial situation, and then assist you and determine what kind of policy you should opt for, helping you save money along the way.
  3. If you are limited in what you can spend, there are options available. You can get a smaller coverage amount to lessen your premium payments. Once your finances improve, you have the option of increasing the coverage amount. On the flip side, consider obtaining a higher life insurance policy. By paying a few extra dollars, the lump sum in the event you die will be thousands of dollars higher and your family will be financially set for many years.
  4. If you get a policy, determine the best means to pay for it. If you can pay your rate annually, do it. By paying rates annually, you could save up to 20 percent on premiums.
  5. Check to see if your employer offers life insurance as you could get a good rate for coverage. If not, you can consider private life insurance.”

If you have any questions or are interested in a life insurance quote for you and your family, please contact us today. Give us a call at (907)745-3261 or visit our homepage to request a free quote. “Protecting. Not Neglecting.” is our motto… make it yours as well.
