Did you know that Governor Sean Parnell has proclaimed that May is "Bike Month" in Alaska? What a perfect time to get out and enjoy some fresh air while cruising along what has to be the most beautiful and scenic roads and trails in the United States. And, get ready for May 18 - Bike to Work Day. If it's feasible for you to do so, this environment friendly and heart healthy exercise would be the perfect start to any work day.

In true leadership fashion, our CEO Dan Crawford, has started off on the right foot! He got a little bit of a head start, and in the past few weeks has already logged 75 miles, biking to and from work. Way to go, Dan!

Dan has set some great goals for himself, and is definitely putting in the work to meet them. Whether your goal is weight loss, cardiovascular fitness or improved focus and mental clarity, cycling is such a great form of exercise to fit into your lifestyle.

According to Dan, "One thing I would like to offer, if you can go faster, good on 'ya. If you are slower, good on 'ya. If you can only go ten minutes, go ten minutes. If you can do two hours, (why are you reading THIS?) I mean, great! Just GO! We all need it. It WILL help us all as we get older regardless of the health insurance or lack thereof as we age up."

Great sentiment. We're also partial to "Now matter how slow you're going, you're still lapping everyone on the couch."

Also, as a reminder while he cleans up his diet, Dan says, "I am committing to memory, 'It was a LOT easier putting all this lard on.'" Oh, wise words, Dan. Wise words.

We will periodically keep you posted on Dan's progress. If you are interested in joining in, leave us a message in the comments. We'd love to cheer you on!

Tip 1: Get to know your neighbors. Bring over baked goods. Share vegetables from your garden. Lend a helping hand if you see that they need help with something.

Tip 2: Support our local schools. Donate time or money for school improvement. Attend school board meetings. Become a parent volunteer and help out in the classroom. Organize a "School Clean Up" day for the community to help clean up the school grounds. Talk to the school principal about getting a group of parents together to plant trees and flowers around the school.

Tip 3: Turn off your tv. Get outside and take a walk or hike. When you pass someone, make eye contact, smile and greet them.

Tip 4: Be nice - for no reason at all. Buy a stranger a cup of coffee. Donate used books to the library. Help a neighbor with yard work. Hold the door open for someone. Bring your coworkers a special treat. Be generous with compliments.

Tip 5: Be thankful. Keep a gratitude journal. Know that what you have is enough. Write thank you notes.

Tip 6: Buy local. Support local businesses to build a strong and prosperous community.

Tip 7: Volunteer for a cause you love. Help out at the Food Bank of Alaska. Give blood. Get involved with the Boys and Girls Club. There are so many wonderful causes. Pick one that speaks to you, and make a difference!

Tip 8: Take pride in your neighborhood. Plant flowers in your yard. Create a welcoming entryway to your home. Organize a neighborhood clean-up program.

Tip 9: Adopt an animal from one of Alaska's animal shelters, or consider donating time, money or supplies to help out.

Tip 10: Be a positive force. Give compliments and smiles freely. Be a good listener.

Tip 11: Give care packages to the homeless. Pack toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, snacks, gloves, warm socks and bottles of water or juice into a gallon-size ziplock bag. Distribute to the homeless in our community or donate toiletries to a local shelter.

Tip 12: Reduce, reuse and recycle. Do your part to help out - conserve energy, resources, and space used in landfills.

Tip 13: Tell someone you love them today. Don't keep it to yourself. Let them know.

Tip 14: Thank a mentor or someone who has inspired you. Let them know how much they have impacted your life and how much they are appreciated.

Tip 15: Thank a veteran. A simple "Thank you for your service" is a great way to show appreciation. Consider volunteering to help local veterans in our community. Visit uso.org for ways you can help.
